In media release the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa ( AFSA) explains that the campaign aims to reduce court case backlogs and to empower a new generation of AFSA-trained mediators under the mentorship and guidance of retired lawyers and judges.

The AFSA said it’s mediation model is anchored in quality mentorship, inclusivity and plans to offer mediation services for disputes.
The campaign aims:
- To support and develop young trained mediators by giving them opportunities to mediate real cases under supervision.
- Ensure high standards of professionalism, ethics and educational value and legal mentorship.
- The foundation explained that not all disputes may qualify and that it reserves the right to assess each case individually.
- The AFSA has launched a new mediation initiative to allow small businesses and individuals to access free mediation in South Africa.
The Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa ( AFSA) was founded in June 1996. It was created as a non- profit company by leading South African law and accounting firms, advocates, and business organizations.
The AFSA has experienced significant positive change by following enactment of the International Arbitration Act 2017 and subsequent update to its international Rules in 2021 leading to a modernised framework and increased international prominence, incorporating UNCITRAL Model Law standards and establishing a new AFSA Court to ensure the proper application of rules.
Applications are now open for AFSA International Commercial Arbitration Module.
