The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has announced major changes to its parliamentary leadership structure, placing more party responsibilities under the Office of the Chief Whip.
According to a memorandum issued by Chief Whip Philasande Mkhize, Dr Mandlakayise Hlophe will serve as party leader in the parliamentary whippery, while Mkhize remains Chief Whip. Wesley Douglas has been appointed Deputy Chief Whip, and Sibongiseni Majola will take responsibility as NCOP Whip.
The restructuring also affects several existing positions. Adil Nchabeleng has been removed as Constituency Whip, while David Skosana and Pinky Mngadi have lost their roles as Elections Whips. The Extended Whippery has been dissolved with immediate effect.
The party says the changes are intended to improve coordination, clarify responsibilities and strengthen the management of parliamentary and party work.
One of the most significant changes is that party deployments, assignments, tasks and constituency responsibilities will now fall under the Chief Whip’s office. This gives the office a wider coordinating role in the party’s political operations.
The changes come amid reports about MK Party leader Jacob Zuma’s hospitalisation. However, the memorandum does not establish whether his reported hospitalisation influenced the restructuring or whether he personally approved the changes.
The new structure marks a significant organisational change within the party’s parliamentary operations.
