In Mandeni, KwaZulu-Natal, a young man named Nkululeko Zulu faced one of the most devastating and humiliating moments of his life. What was meant to be a journey into fatherhood turned into a nightmare that left him shattered to the core.
Nkululeko had been deeply in love with his girlfriend and was overjoyed when she told him she was pregnant. Like any excited father-to-be, he poured his heart, soul, and resources into preparing for their child’s arrival. He supported her financially throughout the pregnancy, bought groceries, and lovingly purchased tiny baby clothes, already picturing himself holding his newborn in his arms.

Then came the devastating news his girlfriend told him their baby had died shortly after birth. The grief was overwhelming, but Nkululeko still wanted to give his child the dignity of a proper farewell. He made funeral arrangements, bought a goat for the ceremony, and even dug a grave for the tiny coffin that was said to hold his baby.
On the day of the burial, surrounded by mourning, the coffin was opened before the final goodbye and that’s when the shocking truth came to light. Inside was not the lifeless body of his child, but a plastic doll wrapped in a baby blanket.
The woman who had shared his dreams and taken his trust had vanished, leaving him humiliated in front of family, friends, and the entire community. What was once a celebration of life had turned into a cruel deception, leaving Nkululeko not only heartbroken but questioning the very love and trust he had once believed in.
A man’s dream of becoming a father had been stolen not by tragedy, but by betrayal. And the wound left behind will take far longer to heal than any grave in the ground.
