Midrand, Gauteng — August 25, 2025
A Facebook Marketplace scam turned violent this week when five robbery suspects were injured in a dramatic shootout with police in Midrand. The confrontation unfolded on Monday after an elaborate police operation was set up to foil a suspected kidnapping and robbery syndicate operating under the guise of online car sales.
The sting was launched following a chilling incident earlier this month that left one victim wounded and traumatized after being lured through a car advertisement on the popular online platform.
From Marketplace to Mayhem
According to Gauteng Deputy Commissioner Fred Kekana, the criminal operation began with a seemingly innocent post: a car for sale on Facebook Marketplace. A potential buyer, enticed by the deal, contacted the seller and arranged to meet.
But what awaited him was not a vehicle it was an ambush.
“The victim was kidnapped during the meeting. He was shot in the legs, and the suspects forced him to provide access to his bank account. They emptied it before abandoning him,” said Kekana in an interview with Newzroom Afrika.
The attack sent shockwaves through the local community and raised urgent questions about the growing dangers of online marketplaces. However, the brazen nature of the criminals would soon become their downfall.
A Second Attempt, a Different Outcome
Unaware that they were already under suspicion, the suspects allegedly re-posted the same car advertisement online a move that ultimately led to their capture.
A second potential victim, who came across the listing, grew suspicious of the meeting location suggested by the seller. Trusting his instincts, he contacted the police before proceeding further.
“This was a crucial moment,” Kekana noted. “The man did the right thing. His alertness enabled us to put together a tactical response team.”
With the victim’s cooperation, the police devised a plan to apprehend the suspects. Officers accompanied the man to the arranged meeting point in Midrand, posing as ordinary civilians.
Gunfire and Chaos
However, the situation escalated rapidly. The suspects, upon realizing that their intended victim was accompanied by law enforcement officers, opened fire.
“The suspects started shooting as soon as they saw the police presence. Our officers retaliated, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire,” said Kekana.
As the shootout unfolded, the suspects attempted a desperate escape, speeding away from the scene. Police responded by firing at the vehicle’s tyres, causing it to overturn.
“All five suspects were injured in the crash. They were immediately taken to hospital under police guard,” Kekana confirmed.
Weapons Recovered, Investigation Ongoing
In the aftermath of the dramatic pursuit, police recovered two firearms from the suspects. While their injuries have not been detailed, all five remain in hospital and are expected to face multiple charges including armed robbery, attempted murder, kidnapping, and illegal possession of firearms.
Authorities believe the group may be connected to other similar scams in the province and have launched a broader investigation into the syndicate’s operations.
Online Marketplaces: A Growing Danger
This incident has highlighted growing concerns about the safety of online buying and selling platforms like Facebook Marketplace. While they offer convenience and access to a wide array of goods, they are also becoming hunting grounds for criminals who exploit users’ trust.
Cybercrime and physical crimes linked to online interactions are on the rise in South Africa and globally. Law enforcement agencies have urged citizens to exercise caution and avoid meeting in isolated locations or without notifying someone.
“Always meet in public places, preferably with surveillance cameras, and never go alone,” Kekana advised. “If something feels off, trust your instincts and walk away.”
A Narrow Escape, A Timely Response
The second victim’s decision to involve police may have saved his life and led to the unraveling of a violent criminal enterprise. Authorities are now urging other victims or individuals who may have encountered similar schemes to come forward.
This incident serves as both a cautionary tale and a testament to the power of vigilance and collaboration between the public and police.
