Police in KuGompo City have arrested three suspects, including a bus driver, after allegedly discovering marijuana with an estimated street value of R500,000 hidden inside a passenger bus.
According to authorities, the arrests were made during a law enforcement operation targeting the movement of illegal substances along key transport routes. Officers reportedly stopped and searched the bus before uncovering a large quantity of compressed cannabis concealed within luggage compartments.
The three suspects among them the driver of the bus were immediately taken into custody and are expected to face charges related to drug possession and trafficking. Police have not yet confirmed where the bus was travelling from or its intended destination, as investigations remain ongoing.
The seizure forms part of broader efforts by the South African Police Service to clamp down on organised drug distribution networks that frequently use public transport systems to move narcotics across provinces and borders.
Authorities say drug trafficking remains a major concern in South Africa, with syndicates increasingly using buses, trucks and courier systems to transport illegal substances undetected. Law enforcement agencies have intensified stop-and-search operations in recent months as part of anti-drug campaigns.
Police also warned that transport operators found complicit in smuggling activities could face serious criminal charges, including charges linked to organised crime legislation.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon, where additional details surrounding the case may emerge.
