The South African embassy in Algeria has confirmed that football coach Rulani Mokwena was detained by authorities after allegedly violating the country’s foreign currency regulations.
According to officials, Mokwena was stopped by customs officers at Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers while attempting to leave the country.
Embassy Confirms Consular Assistance
In a statement, the South African embassy in Algiers said it had been informed of the situation and is currently assisting the 39-year-old coach.
“The embassy in Algiers can confirm that it was notified of the arrest of Mr Rulani Mokwena, who is alleged to have violated Algeria’s foreign currency regulations,” the mission said.
Officials added that the embassy is maintaining contact with Mokwena and providing consular support while the matter is addressed with local authorities.

Allegations of Undeclared Currency
Reports indicate that Mokwena was stopped by customs officials amid allegations that he attempted to leave Algeria with undeclared foreign currency, which would constitute a violation of the country’s strict financial regulations.
Many countries, including Algeria, require travellers to declare large sums of foreign currency when entering or leaving the country in order to prevent money laundering and illegal capital transfers.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the amount of money allegedly involved or whether formal charges will be filed.
Coaching Career Moves
Mokwena recently departed Algerian champions MC Alger, ending his tenure with the club roughly eight months after joining.
The move came as the coach prepared to take up a new role with Libyan giants Al-Ittihad SC, where he is expected to reunite with South African midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch, one of his former players.
Mokwena has built a reputation as one of South Africa’s most promising football coaches, previously gaining prominence through his work with Mamelodi Sundowns, where he achieved major domestic success.
Case Still Developing
At this stage, it remains unclear whether Mokwena will face further legal proceedings in Algeria or if the issue will be resolved administratively.
Diplomatic officials say they will continue to monitor the situation and provide support to the South African coach while investigations continue.
