Could your grandmother’s grant soon be worth R4,500 a month? 👀
EFF leader Julius Malema has called for the monthly social grant for elderly South Africans to be increased to R4,500, arguing that many grandparents are doing far more than simply surviving on their grants.
Speaking at the EFF’s provincial manifesto launch in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, Malema highlighted the crucial role played by grandmothers in many South African households.
According to Malema, elderly people often look after grandchildren, provide food and support unemployed family members, and help keep struggling households going.
He argued that increasing the grant would provide much-needed relief to families who rely heavily on their elderly relatives.
But where would the money come from?
Malema claimed that South Africa has enough resources to fund a R4,500 monthly grant, but alleged that billions of rands in public money are being wasted, mismanaged and misused.
The proposal has now placed the financial well-being of elderly South Africans firmly at the centre of the EFF’s manifesto message.
R4,500 could mean a major change for pensioners but it would also come with a massive cost to the state.
