ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba announces Xolani Khumalo as the party’s candidate to lead Ekurhuleni, pitching the former Moja Love presenter and community activist as a straight-talking problem-solver who can tackle crime, restore basic services and rebuild public confidence in the metro.
Mashaba unveils Khumalo as ActionSA’s pick amid growing frustration in Ekurhuleni over service delivery, corruption and taxi-related violence. In the party’s announcement Mashaba praises Khumalo as a “fearless, ethical leader” with grassroots credibility and a track record of confronting criminals and corruption on camera and in communities.
From “Sizok’thola” to the ballot
Xolani Khumalo first rose to national attention as the presenter of Sizok’thola on Moja Love, a hard-hitting programme that investigated drug dens, exposed under-reported crime and pressured authorities to act. The show’s street-level investigations won Khumalo a following among viewers who see him as willing to expose wrongdoing and demand accountability attributes ActionSA now foregrounds in its mayoral campaign pitch.
Why ActionSA is betting on a TV activist
ActionSA frames Khumalo’s selection as a response to three interlocking problems in Ekurhuleni:
- Crime and gangsterism – long-running taxi and organised-crime violence that undermines safety;
- Service delivery failures – water, sanitation and roads problems that residents cite as daily grievances;
- Trust and accountability – perceptions that municipal systems are captured or slow to act.
Mashaba and his team argue that Khumalo’s public profile, community ties and investigative instincts equip him to mobilise citizens, work with law-enforcement partners and push for stronger governance at municipal level.
What Khumalo brings to the table
Based on his public record and media work, Khumalo’s strengths include:
- Hands-on community engagement and visibility in township precincts.
- An evidence-led approach to exposing criminal activity and demanding institutional responses.
- Name recognition among voters who follow local current-affairs programming.
Political analysts say celebrity and TV-led campaigns can jumpstart attention and mobilise voters — but they also stress the need for a robust policy platform, capable administrative teams and clear plans to translate activism into effective municipal governance.
ActionSA will soon outline Khumalo’s detailed municipal programme and campaign priorities. Key tests will include his ability to attract experienced municipal managers, craft a realistic service-delivery plan and build coalitions in a competitive local government landscape ahead of the 2026 elections.
