Polokwane, Limpopo – The Polokwane Magistrate’s Court is expected to hand down judgment this week in the high-profile bail application of former police sergeant Rachel Kutumela, her sister Anna Shokane, and daughter Florah Shokane, who stand accused of orchestrating a series of killings to claim insurance payouts.
The trio, behind bars since December 2024, have been fighting for bail while facing a combined set of charges linked to an alleged insurance fraud scheme valued at R10 million.

The Charges
Kutumela, the alleged mastermind, faces 32 charges, including nine counts of murder, fraud, and money laundering.
Her sister, Anna Shokane, has been charged with three counts of murder, while her daughter, Florah, faces charges of murder, fraud, and money laundering.
Alleged Scheme

Investigators told the court the accused targeted victims whose deaths were later claimed against multiple insurance policies. Payouts were allegedly distributed among the family, with suspicious bank transfers made between the three following the killings.
Court Proceedings
During hearings, prosecutors argued that the accused present a flight risk and may interfere with witnesses if released. Defence lawyers countered that the state’s case is circumstantial and that their clients should be granted bail pending trial.
The magistrate is expected to deliver a ruling on the matter shortly.
