Thirty people have been arrested for alleged illegal mining in Mohlakeng, Gauteng, during an operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
The suspects, aged between 25 and 43, are from Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Mozambique and South Africa.
The arrests were made on Monday as part of Operation Prosper, an ongoing operation targeting illegal mining and related criminal activities.
Police seized 44 generators, jackhammers, explosives and other equipment believed to be used in illegal mining activities.
A further 21 generators and eight jackhammers were recovered during an operation on Sunday.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court soon, where they will face charges related to the alleged illegal mining activities.
Authorities continue to conduct operations in areas affected by illegal mining as part of efforts to disrupt criminal mining networks and protect communities from the dangers associated with abandoned and illegally operated mine sites.
