MAHIKENG – The North West community is reeling in shock following the brutal killing of well-known activist and traditional healer Thato Molosankwe, who was gunned down at his home in Lomanyaneng on Wednesday morning. His death has sent waves of grief and anger across the province, where he was widely respected for his dedication to community upliftment and the fight against crime.
According to police, Molosankwe sustained multiple gunshot wounds after unknown assailants stormed his property in a targeted attack. Emergency services declared him dead at the scene.
A Community Leader Silenced
Molosankwe was more than just a traditional healer he was a passionate community advocate who worked closely with local law enforcement to address the rising tide of crime, corruption, and social decay in Mahikeng and surrounding areas.
In a statement, the South African Police Service (SAPS) described him as a committed and community-minded individual whose contributions were invaluable.
“Mr Molosankwe has been described by local police as a community-minded individual who played an important role in assisting police efforts aimed at fighting crime and corruption, as well as strengthening relations between SAPS and communities,” the statement read.
His work often put him at the centre of sensitive matters, and residents say he never hesitated to speak truth to power, even when doing so placed him at risk.
SAPS Vows Justice: ‘No Stone Will Be Left Unturned’
Acting National Commissioner Puleng Dimpane strongly condemned the killing and assured the community that SAPS is mobilising extensive resources to track down the perpetrators.
Dimpane has ordered a full-scale manhunt, instructing specialised units to work together to piece together what happened in the hours leading up to Molosankwe’s murder.
“No stone will be left unturned until those responsible are found and brought to book,” Dimpane said, urging residents with information to come forward.
The attack has sparked widespread public outrage, with many calling for faster, more decisive action against those targeting individuals who work for the betterment of society.
Fear, Tension and Questions
In Lomanyaneng, neighbours are struggling to come to terms with the loss. Many reported waking up to the sound of gunfire, describing a chaotic scene as police and paramedics rushed to the area.
Some community members worry that Molosankwe’s death may be linked to his outspoken stance on crime and corruption. Others fear it may be part of a broader pattern of intimidation against activists in the province. Police have not confirmed any motives, saying investigations are at an early stage.
A Legacy of Service and Courage
To many, Molosankwe was a symbol of courage. As both an activist and traditional healer, he bridged the gap between cultural leadership and modern community safety structures. His ability to mobilise residents, mediate conflicts, and collaborate with police made him a respected figure across multiple spheres.
His death leaves a deep void not only in Lomanyaneng, but across Mahikeng and the North West province.
Developing Story
As police intensify their search for the killers, the community waits anxiously for answers. The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
