A routine traffic checkpoint in Khayelitsha escalated into a high-speed pursuit and major drug seizure on Wednesday morning, after a motorist attempted to evade Cape Town traffic officers. What began as a simple licence disc violation quickly unfolded into a dramatic chase spanning several areas and ending in the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect.
According to City of Cape Town traffic spokesperson Kevin Jacobs, officers were stationed along Spine Road at approximately 7:55am when they noticed a white Hyundai i20 approaching without a valid licence disc. Officers signaled for the driver to stop, but instead of complying, he accelerated instantly triggering a pursuit.
The Chase: From Spine Road to Driftsands
The motorist sped through Khayelitsha, weaving through morning traffic as officers gave chase. The pursuit extended towards Mfuleni and Driftsands, with officers maintaining pressure as the suspect attempted to outrun them.
However, the dramatic escape attempt came to an abrupt end.
“The suspect’s vehicle eventually came to a stop after sustaining damage to its front axle and wheel,” Jacobs confirmed. The damage disabled the car, forcing the driver to abandon the vehicle and flee on foot.
Foot Chase and Arrest
Officers immediately pursued him on foot and managed to apprehend him a short distance away. Once the suspect was secured, officers returned to inspect the abandoned Hyundai and the discovery raised even more questions.
24.5 Bags of Dagga Found Hidden in Vehicle
A full search of the vehicle uncovered approximately 24.5 bags of dagga, indicating that the suspect may have been transporting the drugs for distribution.
The size of the haul suggests more than just personal use, and authorities believe the man may be part of a wider network operating within the region.
Charges and Ongoing Investigation
The suspect is now facing multiple charges, including:
- Reckless and negligent driving
- Failure to comply with lawful instructions
- Possession of a large quantity of dagga
He is currently being detained at Mfuleni Police Station, where a criminal case has been opened. Police are also expected to investigate the origin of the dagga and whether the suspect is connected to known drug-trafficking operations in Khayelitsha and neighbouring communities.
