Johannesburg – Eskom has released its latest Gauteng load reduction schedule for the week of 3 to 9 September 2025, affecting thousands of households and businesses across the province. The measures, aimed at protecting the power grid from overloading, will see planned electricity supply cuts in specific communities during peak hours.
Why Load Reduction Is Needed

Unlike loadshedding, which is rotational and nationwide, load reduction is targeted. It mainly impacts areas with high demand, illegal connections, and infrastructure theft that place severe strain on the electricity network.
Gauteng, as South Africa’s economic hub, consumes vast amounts of power. To prevent transformer damage, fires, and costly equipment failures, Eskom implements scheduled reductions in high-risk zones.
When Load Reduction Happens
Load reduction generally takes place during peak demand periods:
- Morning: 05h00 – 09h00
- Evening: 17h00 – 22h00

How to Prepare for Load Reduction
- Charge phones, power banks, and backup batteries.
- Unplug appliances to avoid surges.
- Use LED or solar lights instead of candles for safety.
- Keep refrigerators closed during outages.
- Prepare meals in advance.
Safety First
Residents are urged to avoid illegal connections, report infrastructure theft, and follow safety measures during outages to prevent fires and accidents.
Long-Term Outlook
Eskom says it is upgrading substations and power lines across Gauteng to reduce dependence on load reduction. However, until infrastructure challenges and illegal connections are addressed, planned reductions will continue in high-risk areas.
