Johannesburg – Tragedy struck in Gauteng on 01 September 2025 when a violent cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery on Barry Marais Road, Dawn Park, left two innocent bystanders dead and several others injured.
The Heist

According to police, a silver Mercedes-Benz rammed a cash vehicle from behind, forcing it to capsize onto a quantum taxi carrying seven passengers.
- Five people sustained injuries and were treated on scene.
- Two others escaped unhurt.
A group of about eight heavily armed suspects then bombed the cash vehicle and fled with an undisclosed amount of money.
Gunfire was exchanged between the suspects and a nearby security company. In the crossfire, two bystanders were fatally shot.
Police Warning
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has urged members of the public to:
- Avoid approaching CIT scenes,
- Refrain from collecting money scattered during robberies,
- Report suspicious activity via the Crime Stop Line: 08600 10111.

Breakthrough Arrest
Hours later, law enforcement made a breakthrough. A joint operation involving Gauteng Highway Patrol, Ekurhuleni Metro Police, and Crime Intelligence led to the arrest of one suspect at a safe house in Rondebult.
Recovered items include:
- A rifle and five loaded magazines,
- Stained cash notes,
- Two vehicles (a Mercedes-Benz and BMW) believed to have been used in the heist.
Police confirm that search efforts for the remaining suspects are ongoing, with investigations at an advanced stage.

The robbery adds to the growing concern over the frequency and escalating violence of CIT crimes in South Africa. Communities are calling for tougher measures to protect both security personnel and ordinary citizens caught in the crossfire.
