Bloemfontein – The high-profile case of convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester and his partner, Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, has been postponed to 5 December 2025 for further case management.
The pair briefly appeared before the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein on Friday, alongside seven co-accused linked to Bester’s audacious prison break from Mangaung Correctional Service Centre.

The Charges
Magudumana, Bester, and their co-accused face multiple charges including:
- Fraud
- Money laundering
- Arson
- Violation of a corpse
- Orchestrating Bester’s escape
The duo were dramatically arrested in Arusha, Tanzania, in May 2022 after fleeing South Africa.
Legal Delays
One of the key reasons for the postponement is Magudumana’s challenge to the lawfulness of her extradition. After her application was dismissed by the Supreme Court of Appeal in May, the Constitutional Court is now expected to weigh in.

Meanwhile, courtroom drama unfolded as Bester dismissed his lawyer, Lerato Moela, who subsequently withdrew from the case. Bester informed the court that Advocate MoAfrica Wa Maila would step in, though Judge Sulet Potterill cautioned that the trial cannot be delayed indefinitely.
“There might be a time when you will have to conduct your own case if you do not have counsel,” Judge Potterill warned, stressing that the court will eventually proceed whether Bester secures representation or not.
What’s Next
The case resumes on 5 December, with the Constitutional Court’s decision on Magudumana’s extradition appeal expected to heavily influence proceedings.
