Despite a convincing 3-0 victory over Magesi FC in their Betway Premiership match at Lucas Moripe Stadium, Mamelodi Sundowns have been handed a worrying injury blow. Veteran midfielder Themba Zwane was substituted late after coming off the bench, and the club fears this may be a new issue for the 36-year-old.
The win restored Sundowns to the top of the league table, with a goal by Kutlwano Letlhaku and a second-half brace from Iqraam Rayners securing the three points. However, Zwane’s early exit overshadowed the match.
What We Know So Far
- Zwane entered the match around the 63rd minute but was forced off around the 82nd minute and left visibly distraught.
- Coach Miguel Cardoso says the injury doesn’t seem to be the same as Zwane’s previous thigh injury but stresses they are waiting on official medical feedback.
- Zwane has been in and out of the squad since sustaining a thigh injury in mid-August during the MTN8 competition.
- Cardoso expressed hope that the injury is minor: “Let’s see what’s happening … it’s not the same thing he had before … Let’s hope it’s nothing serious.”

Looking Ahead
Given a packed schedule, Sundowns will hope Zwane recovers quickly. They’re due to face Marumo Gallants midweek and host Durban City on Saturday. Loss of Zwane for either match could impact their midfield stability.
