The Republic of South Africa has announced with “deep sorrow and profound regret” the untimely passing of His Excellency Ambassador Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, who served as South Africa’s Ambassador to the French Republic. (Statement by the Government of South Africa)
Ambassador Mthethwa had a distinguished public service career, including roles as Minister of Police and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, and membership on the Board of Directors of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee. Prior to his diplomatic posting, he was active in the African National Congress’s highest decision-making structures.
In December 2023, he was appointed to strengthen bilateral relations between South Africa and France.
“I have no doubt that his passing is not only a national loss but is also felt within the international diplomatic community,” remarked Minister Lamola in an official statement.
The French authorities are investigating the circumstances of his passing. The South African Government extends its “deepest and most sincere condolences” to Ambassador Mthethwa’s family, friends, and colleagues. He is survived by his wife and children.
