Rustenburg – A 23-year-old rape suspect who escaped from lawful custody earlier this week has been re-arrested in Rustenburg, North West, following a joint operation by a multi-disciplinary police task team.
The suspect was originally arrested on 1 September 2025 in Umzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal, after allegedly raping a 28-year-old woman in Sisulu location. According to police, the victim managed to flee the scene and immediately reported the incident to local authorities, leading to the suspect’s swift arrest.

However, the suspect later managed to escape from custody, triggering a manhunt across provincial lines.
Multi-Disciplinary Task Team Assembled
Following the escape, a multi-disciplinary team was formed to trace the suspect. The specialised unit included members of:
- National Crime Intelligence (Multi-Dimensional Organised Crime)
- Rustenburg District Crime Intelligence
- Phokeng K9 Unit
- Kokstad Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit
- Rustenburg Community Policing Forum (CPF)
Acting on a tip-off, the team traced the suspect to an address in Rustenburg and apprehended him in the early hours of Saturday morning (6 September).
Escape Under Investigation

Police confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s escape remain under investigation, with possible disciplinary action expected against those found negligent.
National Crackdown on Sexual Offences
The re-arrest comes as SAPS intensifies its fight against gender-based violence and sexual offences. Just last month, police arrested 2 284 sexual offenders across the country for crimes including rape, sexual assault, abduction, attempted rape, and related offences.
