Kyiv – Ukraine has endured one of the deadliest bombardments of its capital since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, with at least four people killed and over 70 injured in a 12-hour assault that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned as a “vile and cowardly” attack.
The overnight strikes, which stretched into Sunday morning, saw Russia unleash nearly 600 drones and more than 40 cruise missiles targeting Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa.
Devastation in Kyiv
In the capital, residents awoke to air raid sirens, anti-aircraft fire, and explosions. In Petropavlivska Borshchahivka, an entire street was torn apart when a missile struck, blowing off roofs and shattering windows.
A 12-year-old girl, Oleksandra, was killed when a falling concrete slab crushed her home. Neighbours described her as a lively student who had just returned from Canada to continue her studies in Kyiv.
Other casualties included a nurse and a patient killed after Kyiv’s cardiology institute was hit. The body of another victim was recovered from rubble.
Mark Serhiyiv, a Kyiv-based army chaplain, said his family narrowly escaped death. “It’s the second time Moscow has destroyed my home. The roof was torn off right above my eldest son’s bed. It’s a blessing from God they survived,” he said.
National Impact and Global Condemnation
The attacks also struck Zaporizhzhia, where children were among the wounded after a high-rise apartment block was hit. Across the country, firefighters and rescue workers battled flames, collapsed masonry, and destroyed infrastructure.
Ukraine’s presidential office chief Andriy Yermak said:
“Once again, residential buildings and infrastructure are being hit. Once again, it is a war against civilians.”
International condemnation was swift:
- UK Defence Secretary John Healey said the strikes proved Putin was “committed to war” and pledged stronger UK support.
- Finland’s President Alexander Stubb called for additional EU sanctions, describing the attack as “cold-blooded” targeting of civilians.
- Poland scrambled fighter jets, closed airspace near its southeastern border cities, and placed air defences on high alert.
Zelenskyy’s Response
Speaking after the attack, Zelenskyy said Russia’s goal was to prolong the war while benefitting from oil revenues. He urged allies to ban Russian oil imports and escalate economic pressure.
“This is precisely how Russia shows its true position,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram. “Moscow wants to keep fighting and killing and deserves only the harshest pressure in the world.”
He warned that Russia was preparing to escalate beyond Ukraine, citing drone incursions into Poland, Denmark, Romania, and Estonia in recent weeks.
Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, insisted Moscow had no plans to attack NATO states but warned any aggression against Russia would be met with a “decisive response.”
