Johannesburg, 18 September 2025 – The National Taxi Association’s Gauteng chairperson, Thami Moyo, has been shot dead in what police believe is linked to ongoing taxi violence in the province.
Moyo, 58, was gunned down on Thursday morning while driving along the Soweto Highway near Diepkloof. According to police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo, Moyo’s Toyota Hilux was intercepted at around 9:30am by suspects travelling in two vehicles – a minibus taxi and another Hilux.

“He was blocked in and fired on multiple times. He succumbed to his wounds and was certified dead at the scene,” Masondo said.
Taxi Violence Suspected
National Taxi Association spokesperson Theo Malele confirmed the killing, describing it as an assassination but stressing that the motive remains unknown and under investigation.
Police, however, suspect the attack is linked to the province’s persistent taxi violence. Masondo noted that Gauteng has witnessed a spate of industry-related killings this year.
Earlier in April, the Gauteng government announced it had brokered a ceasefire between the National Taxi Alliance (NTA) and the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) after bloodshed claimed at least 59 lives in the province since January 2025.
Police Appeal for Information
Masondo urged members of the public with information to come forward.
“Police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in the apprehension of the suspects to please call the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information can also be given anonymously via the MySAPS app,” he said.

The assassination of Moyo marks another chilling reminder of the deep-rooted violence plaguing the minibus taxi industry, which remains a vital yet volatile part of South Africa’s transport system.
