Alleged underworld boss Nafiz Modack has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, with three of those years suspended, following his corruption conviction tied to paying a senior police officer for protection and interference in investigations. The sentence was handed down in the Cape Town Regional Court.
Key Details of the Case
- Modack was convicted for paying R150,000 to former police Brigadier Kolindren Govender in exchange for “special treatment.”

- Govender pleaded guilty in 2019 to 51 corruption charges relating to the arrangement.
- Among the outcomes of the corrupt relationship, Govender prevented the seizure of Modack’s Mercedes-Benz vehicle and obstructed other police investigations.
- The 10-year prison sentence means Modack will serve an effective 7 years behind bars, as 3 years are suspended for five years, meaning those 3 years are conditional on future conduct.
Wider Implications and Pending Cases

- Although he’s been sentenced for corruption, Modack is still facing several other serious charges including attempted murder, murders, extortion, tax fraud and related offences. These cases are ongoing in various courts.
- This case has been long in the making: corruption took place in 2011, and final witness testimony was only completed more recently.
