Cape Town, South Africa Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s chief of staff, Cedrick Nkabinde, has publicly detailed his long-standing friendship with KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, describing their relationship as deeply personal and rooted in mutual trust.

Speaking during an internal discussion, Nkabinde said he had been transparent with Minister Mchunu about his close bond with the provincial police commissioner.
“I disclosed to the minister that the KZN police boss is my friend,” Nkabinde said, adding that their relationship extends far beyond professional boundaries.

“He knows my family, I go to his house, I know his family. He comes and visits me in my house we eat from one plate together. We are very close,” Nkabinde explained.
Nkabinde went further to suggest that their friendship has been built over years of shared experiences, describing Mkhwanazi as a confidant and mentor during difficult times.

He revealed that the commissioner had once helped him secure employment when he was struggling financially. “He helped me find a job when I was unemployed,” Nkabinde said, noting that their friendship included informal social activities such as “boys’ trips.”
“There are things that he and I share and will take to the grave,” he added, emphasizing the depth of their personal connection.

The revelations have drawn attention given both men’s senior positions within South Africa’s policing and security structures. While it remains unclear whether the disclosure has any bearing on official matters, the remarks have sparked public interest over potential conflicts of interest or ethical considerations surrounding their close relationship.

Neither the Police Ministry nor Commissioner Mkhwanazi has issued an official response to Nkabinde’s comments.
