Mandla Mandela, grandson of the late President Nelson Mandela, will be among 10 South Africans joining the largest civilian flotilla yet to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, comprising more than 50 boats from at least 44 countries, is set to converge in the Mediterranean on 4 September 2025. Its mission is to deliver humanitarian aid and draw international attention to the plight of Palestinians living under siege.
Speaking in Johannesburg, Mandela emphasised the urgency of the mission: “We are determined to end the blockade and break the siege on Gaza,” he said, highlighting the severe humanitarian crisis where thousands face hunger and shortages of basic necessities.
His remarks echo the words of his grandfather, Nelson Mandela, who famously declared that “our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.”

The participation of South Africa in the flotilla underscores the country’s long-standing solidarity with the Palestinian struggle, rooted in shared histories of oppression and resistance.
