Johannesburg – Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has strongly condemned the shooting of provincial traffic wardens in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, which left five officers injured over the weekend.
The incident unfolds in the early hours of Sunday morning when traffic wardens, conducting a routine patrol, attempted to search a group of around 12 suspects. The suspects retaliated with gunfire, using what authorities believe to be high-calibre weapons, leaving the wardens wounded.
‘Violence Will Not Deter Us’
Premier Lesufi labelled the shooting an attack on the rule of law and vowed that it will not deter the province’s law enforcement officers from fulfilling their duties.
“This act of violence demonstrates utter disregard for the rule of law. Our wardens, together with law enforcement officers, serve daily on the frontlines to ensure the safety and security of our communities,” Lesufi said.
He added that intimidation or interference in law enforcement activities will not be tolerated.
Case Opened, Perpetrators Pursued
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened a case of attempted murder and launched an intensive manhunt for the suspects.
“We are working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and face the full might of the law. I commend the wardens for their bravery and commitment under such dangerous circumstances and wish them a speedy recovery. I extend my thoughts and prayers to their families during this difficult time,” Lesufi said.
