Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has taken swift action against two senior officials in the provincial Department of Community Safety, suspending both the Head of Department (HOD), Nontsikelelo Sisulu, and the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Mduduzi Malope, following the outcome of a forensic investigation.
The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) confirmed the suspensions on Wednesday, citing “financial irregularities” uncovered within the department as the trigger for the Premier’s intervention.
“This prompted the Premier to intervene to safeguard the department’s integrity. The suspensions are a precautionary measure to ensure fair and unbiased investigations,” the GPG said in a statement.
Integrity and Accountability in Focus
The suspensions mark a critical moment for the Department of Community Safety, which is tasked with overseeing key security initiatives across the province, including crime prevention partnerships and traffic enforcement.
Premier Lesufi stated that acting officials will be appointed to the roles of HOD and CFO to ensure that the department’s daily operations and service delivery continue without disruption.
“We maintain a zero-tolerance stance against corruption and misconduct. Through proactive and corrective measures, we will strengthen governance, ensure the ethical and responsible use of public funds, and safeguard the interests of Gauteng residents,” said Lesufi.
The move forms part of Lesufi’s broader campaign to restore public confidence in provincial institutions, following a series of investigations into corruption and maladministration across several departments.
It also follows recent revelations from multiple forensic reports released under Lesufi’s leadership, reinforcing the Gauteng government’s declared commitment to transparency and ethical governance.
Stakeholders, including civil society groups and opposition parties, have cautiously welcomed the move, but have called for the full report on the financial misconduct to be made public once legal processes are complete.
