A late-night bus crash on the R81 in Sekgopo, Mopani District, has claimed the lives of four women and left more than 50 passengers injured, the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has confirmed.
The accident occurred on Saturday night, 9 August 2025, when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.
According to preliminary reports:
- 4 women were pronounced dead at the scene
- 8 passengers sustained serious to moderate injuries
- 45 passengers, including the driver, suffered minor injuries
Emergency responders transported the injured to Kgapane Hospital, Mankweng Hospital, and Van Velden Hospital for urgent medical care.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the crash, with mechanical failure, speeding, and driver fatigue among possible contributing factors.
Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC Florence Radzilani extended condolences to the bereaved families and urged bus operators to put passenger safety above all else.
“This tragic accident is a reminder that every road journey must be approached with utmost caution. We call on all road users, especially those in public transport, to strictly follow traffic laws and ensure vehicles are roadworthy,” she said.
Public Safety Reminder
The department emphasised the need for extra vigilance on busy provincial routes like the R81, which connects multiple communities and is a key transport corridor in the Mopani District.
Road safety officials are expected to conduct increased inspections of long-distance buses and roadworthiness checks in the coming weeks.

Residents of Sekgopo and surrounding areas have expressed grief and shock at the tragedy, with community leaders calling for better public transport safety measures.
