Johannesburg – Alleged crime kingpin and tenderpreneur Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala appeared at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he applied for bail in a high-profile case that has gripped Gauteng.
Bail Application Underway
Matlala, who faces multiple criminal charges, made a solo court appearance for his formal bail application. His co-accused – including his wife and two alleged hitmen – are expected to join proceedings next month.

Allegations of a Contract Killing
The state alleges that Matlala and his associates conspired to kill his ex-girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane, in 2023. He faces charges of:
- Attempted murder
- Conspiracy to commit murder
- Money laundering
Thobejane, a media personality and influencer, was allegedly the target of a planned hit ordered by the accused.
Links to Police Corruption

Matlala’s name has also surfaced in broader allegations of corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS). He was implicated in high-level graft exposed by KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, raising questions about his influence and connections within law enforcement.
