Pretoria — Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, will go head-to-head with National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola in the North Gauteng High Court today as he seeks to have his suspension overturned.
Sibiya, suspended in July for the alleged unlawful disbandment of the KwaZulu-Natal political killings task team, has strongly denied the accusations. He argues that his suspension was unlawful and is asking the court to reinstate him to his position.

Last week, proceedings were delayed after Sibiya requested that the matter be heard by a full bench of judges. In a new supplementary affidavit, he cited concerns raised by Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia over the return of 121 dockets to the task team. He also referenced comments from the Presidency, noting that President Cyril Ramaphosa had questioned Masemola’s decision to remove the dockets from his office.
The outcome of the case could have significant implications for both Sibiya’s career and the handling of politically motivated killings in KwaZulu-Natal.
