Johannesburg, 10 September 2025 – A week-long water outage in Westbury and Coronationville has sparked violent protests, with frustrated residents blocking roads, burning tyres, and clashing with police who responded with stun grenades, teargas, and rubber bullets. Several residents and a Daily Maverick reporter were injured.
The demonstrations escalated outside Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, where unarmed residents with raised hands faced heavily armed officers before being dispersed by flashbangs and rubber bullets.
“We Don’t Want the Mayor, We Want the Premier”
Residents called for Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero to step down, demanding Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi address the crisis directly.
“We don’t want the mayor of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, he has failed. We want his boss, the premier,” an elderly Coronationville resident told Daily Maverick.
A local pastor said the community has suffered water disruptions for over six years, while 18-year-old Liam Willet said he could not attend school and was “tired of neglect.”
